Whether it’s playing, participating, competing, coaching, volunteering, celebrating or administering: Sport Southland wants every Southlander to be involved with sport and recreation.

With offices in Invercargill and Gore and programmes and initiatives Southland-wide, Sport Southland has a strong presence throughout the region, including in the Wakatipu Basin, which is serviced by Sport Central - a joint venture between Sport Southland and Sport Otago.

Sport Southland is a not-for-profit Regional Sports Trust.

The main components of Sport Southland's work are:


Our community sport team provides a wide range of support to Regional Sports Organisations (RSOs), clubs and schools. The team administers the KiwiSport Fund and associated programmes in schools, co-ordinates the ILT and BNZ Holiday Sports Programmes, facilitates SportStart in Southland primary schools, and offers extensive support in coaching, talent development and capability.

Sport Southland runs a number of Southland's key events, including the ICC Surf to City, MLT Moonshine Trail and Mitre 10 Mega Invercargill Tough Kid. Our events team also provides support, advice, expertise and equipment to a huge range of events in the area.

Active Lifestyles

Sport Southland supports active lifestyles across all age groups, with the aim of making more Southlanders more active more often. Our active lifestyles advisors support people to be more active through Green Prescription and a number of associated programmes including Active Families and Active Walkers KiwiSeniors.

Healthy Families Invercargill

Healthy Families Invercargill is a new initiative, that aims to improve people's health where they live, learn, work and play by taking a dynamic systems approach to preventing chronic disease. The Healthy Families Invercargill team is based within the Sport Southland team and works to support local leaders to galvanise voluntary action across multiple settings and implement initiatives that encourage children and families to lead healthy, active lives.
