It's all about having fun - and it's free!

What is Active Families?

It's a programme designed to support families to make healthier choices regarding both physical activity and nutrition.

How does it work?

Sport Southland holds fun, practical weekly group sessions for all participants - a parent should accompany the child/ren involved, and must be willing to get involved as it is a family-based programme. 

Each session will focus on either physical activity (offering new activities to try in a supportive environment) and healthy eating (through practical cooking and nutrition sessions). 

Sport Southland also works closely with individual families on personalised goal setting over a six month period. 

Who is the programme aimed at?

Any family with a young person aged five to 12 years that could do with some support and guidance around physical activity and healthy eating. 

To join the programme your child should fit the following criteria:

  • Aged five to 12 years

  • Would benefit from being more active or has poor eating habits

  • Is possibly overweight

  • Has supportive family/whanau

  • Is medically stable

Siblings are also encouraged to take part in the sessions.

Once you've registered for the programme you will learn tips and ideas on family-friendly physical activities and sports, as well as low-cost, nutritious meal ideas! We also welcome interest from families with more than one child fitting the criteria.
