Southland Leisure Strategy

The Southland Leisure Strategy project involves one of New Zealand's most comprehensive and integrated reviews of regional leisure participation, facility usage and predicted future leisure participation trends.

Importantly, the project links the key areas of sport/active leisure with arts, crafts and culture to provide details of the 'total leisure picture' in one of the country's most unique geographical regions, covering the most southerly and westerly areas of New Zealand.

The project has been actively supported by a range of organisations that are all contributing to the active lifestyles of people living in the region. Many of these organisations initially met in May 2000 for a planning forum that aimed to:

"Co-ordinate an understanding of how all organisations involved with facilities and sport and physical recreation, in Southland could more effectively work together."

Subsequent to that planning forum the project scope was expanded to incorporate arts, craft and culture - the aim being to provide a comprehensive view and develop strategies relevant to the total leisure picture.

This resulted in the formation of a combined alliance of organisations that developed a comprehensive leisure strategy project brief and attracted sufficient funds to finance the project.
