Movement for Health involves weekly 45-minute sessions of seated and standing exercises, suitable for anyone that wants to increase strength and balance.
These classes run in Winton, Bluff, Riverton, Invercargill and Gore.
The sessions are aimed at improving balance, co-ordination and muscle strength as well as reducing the risk of having a fall. The programme is based on a modified version of Tai Chi which studies have shown to improve:
- Muscle strength which is important for supporting and protecting joints
- Flexibility which is important to enable people to move easier and facilitate circulation of body fluid and blood
- Fitness which is important for overall functioning of the heart, lungs, and muscles.
- Posture which provides correct alignment of the spine
Participants have shown definite improvements in not only their balance and strength but also increased confidence levels in their own capabilities.
These classes are now run independently of Sport Southland and are run by community members who are all qualified Tai Chi instructors.
For all of these classes there is no need to register - just come along.
