Active Children
"Increasing the activity levels of young people"
In December 2007, SPARC (Sport & Recreation New Zealand) announced newly adopted physical activity guidelines for children and young people (ages 5-18). The New Zealand Physical Activity Guidelines for children and young people (5 - 18 year olds) state that New Zealand children and young people should:
• throughout each day, do 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity
• be active in as many ways as possible; for example, through play, cultural activities, dance, sport and recreation, jobs, and going from place to place
• be active with friends and whanau, at home, school, and in your community
• spend less than 2-hours a day (out of school time) in front of television, computers and game consoles
Active Youth’s mission is about increasing the physical activity levels of young people through sport and recreation. The Active Youth team at Sport Southland is committed to providing information and opportunities for children aged 12 years and under and their communities.

Skills Based Health & Physical Education ProgrammeThe Skills Based Health and Physical Education Programme is run by Sport Southland and funded by the Invercargill Licensing Trust. Children travel to Stadium Southland once a week where they are split up into ability based groups, and receive teaching & coaching by Sport Southland staff. The programme provides a focus on developing generic sporting skills, such as running, jumping, passing & catching as well as kicking, rather than sports specific skills. The skills learnt by the children are transferable across a variety of sports. |
