Education
Children are born to move and in their early years they have an insatiable desire to move and learn about themselves and their relationship to their environment in which they live. However, the physical activity needs of young children are quite different from the needs of older children and adults. Active Movement is engaging in quality physical movement experience which develop and enhance the spiritual, emotional, social, cognitive and physiological growth of the pre school aged child. Active movement embodies the whole child.
Active Movement is all about:
- knowing the whole child - their strengths and interests
- the learning and practising of fundamental movement skills
- the contribution that movement makes to brain, sensory development & learning
- developing positive internal motivation for long term health & wellbeing
- appreciating the child as both an intellectual and social being
- movement being meaningful and relevant for the child and family
- children becoming familiar with a bicultural / multicultural movement landscape
-
the weaving through all learning experiences of our rich cultural heritages of the peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand

2004 Special Focus Project
In 2004, a new project was launched in conjunction with Southland Kindergartens Association and Sport Southland that focused on delivering activity sessions in 2 Kindergartens (Riverton and Elsie St, Gore) for 10 consecutive weeks including professional development for teachers and parents as well as a research project evaluating fundamental skills in children. This was extremely successful, with teachers noticing remarkable improvement in children's skill levels from day to day. Children also showed an interest in using the equipment supplied outside of organised activities. Research testing before and after the programme backed up the observations of the teachers with large improvements in the majority of children.
Active Movement in Southland
Active Movement is aimed at helping Southland children embark on healthy active lives through educating teachers, parents and the community. The Active Movement initiative aims to increase physical activity levels while providing quality movement experiences for children in the 0-5 age group. Sport Southland aim to work with educators, caregivers, early childhood settings and comunities providing knowledge, support and training in “Active Movement” concepts and outcomes.
