ILT Skills Based Programme
The ILT Skills Based Programme is run by Sport Southland and funded by the Invercargill Licensing Trust. Children travel to Stadium Southland once a week where they are split into ability based groups, and receive instruction by Sport Southland staff. The programme provides a 6 week focus on developing basic fundamental skills including, catching throwing, kicking, jumping and balance which forms the foundations for all the sports and activities we know today. The skills learnt by the children are transferable across a variety of sports.
Sport Southland staff place the specific skill of the session, into the game context and allow the student to see the relevance of that skill to game situations. With this approach the students will develop tactical awareness and decision making skills.
In March 2003 a study was completed looking at the participation, facility usage and key service issues affecting sport and recreation in Southland. The outcome of the study’s finding was a Pilot Skills Based Programme that ran in Term 4, 2003. Children of different age groups across primary & intermediate sector participated in the programme. The pilot revealed that the best age to direct the programme at was 6-8 year olds, as this is where children begin their participation in specific structured sports.
Since 2004, children from various schools throughout Invercargill have been traveling to Stadium Southland once a week for a 6 week block receiving coaching on these fundamental skills.
Skills include:
- Locomotor skills - running, jumping and hopping
- Stability skills – balance
- Manipulative skills – throwing, catching, striking with the feet
