Aim:
Encourage local businesses to get physically active as much as possible for five weeks from November 1st. Each team records the amount of time they exercise each day and enters this online once a week.
Overview:
Challenge starts 1st November and finishes Monday December 5th
Five people per team (unless a small business)
$20 per person
Three categories:
o Small Businesses - less than five employees
o Active at Work - teams that are active for more than 2 hours during work time e.g. Couriers, Personal Trainers
o Office based - office/car based work
How it works:
o Teams sign up online
o Each time you are active you record how many minutes of activity you complete on large wall charts provided
o Each time you walk or cycle to work or to a meeting, you count your active transport trips
o Each week, minutes and active trips are recorded online so you can see your progress
For the purpose of counting minutes for the Workplace Challenge, “physical activity or exercise” is defined as “any activity that is a recognised sport and/or done at a level that increases your heart rate and/increases your breathing rate and is done for at least 5 minutes”.
See below for examples of recreational activities that will contribute towards minutes for the Challenge.
Example 1:
Household duties may or may not count towards ‘active minutes’ please consider; the type of activities you are undertaking and the effect the activity has on your breathing and heart rate (does you breathing become faster and sharper? Is your heart beating more rapidly?)
e.g. “Weeding while kneeling or potting plants” may not increase your heart rate and breathing if you are of a reasonable fitness level; however it is likely that “mowing a large lawn with a push mower” or “digging your large vegetable garden” will. It is up to the individual to use their own judgement for these types of activities.
Likewise; some organised sports may not involve the participant for 5 continual minutes and dependent on your individual fitness may not increase your breathing and heart rate. Therefore these sports should not be included in your minutes for this challenge.
e.g. “Darts” “Ten Pin Bowling” and “Bowls” are recognised sports that are dependent on your fitness level but may not increase your breathing and heart rate.
