Events

More and more people are getting involved in events to keep active and enhance motivation. Sport Southland has made a commitment to support community events, some of these including:

Community Trust of Southland Surf to City
In 2010 the arrival of a brief band of showers and a chilly breeze early the morning of the Event put off many of our “casuals”. However the conditions by the time the Event started were perfect and by mid-morning the sun was fully out.
Our new 6km Walk/Run Event was very well patronised with around 300 starting from Curran Rd. We also had a good increase in our Halberg Event, well supported by local Westpac staff.
The Finish ambience was enhanced this year by the addition of Buskers from the Summer Festival.

In strict contrast to 2009, in 2010 we had glorious weather and dry underfoot/wheel conditions. The Run numbers showed a significant increase and the new course (sharing sections of the Mountainbike Course), received excellent feedback. This year’s decision to hold the prize-giving and all post event activities at Dolamore Park, was well received with a great atmosphere evident throughout the afternoon affirming this change.

Ascot Park Hotel Southland Marathon
Held on 22nd Nov, 2009; the day produced excellent conditions for the record numbers of competitors we hosted in both the Marathon and Half Marathon. 2009 was the 100th year anniversary of the first Marathon held in the Southern Hemisphere on this course and also the NZ Marathon Champs. Competitors from as far a field as the USA, UK, Iceland and the Netherlands remarked on the quality of organisation, great course and friendly atmosphere.
A new sub-event a Kids Marafun attracted over 300 entrants.
