The 2006 SBS Southland Sports Awards were held on Friday 18th May at Stadium Southland.
The aims of the Awards are:
- to inspire the Southland sporting community
- to recognise and honour the outstanding achievements and performances
- to recognise and honour our top coaches
- to recognise and honour the services of our top officials and administrators
- to promote positive sporting role models for Southlanders
Winners
ILT Senior Sportsperson of the Year: Storm Uru (rowing).
The Community Trust of Southland Junior Sportsperson: Natalie Wiegersma (swimming).
GWD Russells Team of the Year: Southland Under 19 Netball Team (netball).
The Radio Network Coach of the Year: Alister Morris (rowing).
Administrator of the Year: Esther Price (swimming).
Sport Southland Services to Sport: Ron Garrett (table tennis) and Peter Tetai (rugby).
Guest Speaker
This year’s guest speaker was former All Black Frank Bunce, renown as a rugged, gifted footballer and one of the toughest centres in the world.
Since his retirement from the game, Frank has had numerous guest presenting and commentating roles on radio and television, most recently as a member of the Sky Sports Super 14 commentary team and starring in the current season of "Dancing with the Stars".
