Share the Road
"Design a Banner"
Competition

 

Share the Road and Sport Southland, as part of our role with the Tour and our partners Road Safety Southland, Police and RoadSense are running a great competition in the lead-up to and during the Tour.

The banner competition will be familiar to many of you and has proved very popular in past years. This year sees a few changes around the content of the banners. The purpose of the banner is to promote the ‘Share the Road’ ‘Being a safe and responsible rider’ and ‘Push Play’ messages.

Conditions of Entry

  • The bigger the banner the better. There is no restriction on size.
  • The banner must include the following logos – Powernet – Tour of Southland , Share the Road and Push Play (you can view these logos on the Sport Southland website).
  • The banner must include a ‘Share the Road’ or ‘Being a safe and responsible rider’ message on it which is easily read.  Examples:
    • be bright on your bike
    • same rules, same rights, same roads
    • obey the road rules
    • make yourself visible in the dark
    • ride defensively, keep a metre out from parked cars
    • always use your lights at night.
    • look for cyclists before you open your door
    • look twice for cyclists at intersections
    • check for cyclists before reversing out from a driveway
    • don’t drive in the cycle lane
    • give cyclists space
    • don’t cut cyclists off when turning left
    • check for cyclists, indicate and give them space when turning left
    • check for cyclists, use your mirrors, check your blind spot before you turn
    • give cyclists space at roundabouts
    • share the road, give cyclists space
    • ease your pace and give them space
    • check for cyclists before crossing a cycle lane
    • don't burst our bubble
  • Each banner must include the names, ages and school of those who contributed to it on the reverse side.
  • The banner may include graphics and can be made of any medium.
  • The banner must be able to be hung on a flat surface.
  • Every endeavour will be made to collect the banners following the Tour passing by your school but responsibility for the delivery of those not collected to the Sport Southland offices at SBS SportsHouse, Stadium Southland remains with the individual schools. Banner should be delivered to Sport Southland by 4.00pm Friday 9th November.
  • Judging of the competition will be done by Sport Southland, Road Safety Southland, and RoadSense staff.
  • The banners will be made available for collection from Sport Southland after 9.00am Tuesday 11th November. Any banners not collected after Friday 14th November become the property of Sport Southland.

If schools require a blank banner to decorate please contact Sport Southland 03 211 2150 and we can assist with this (maximum of 3 per school)

Prizes

The winning banners will earn a selection of prizes worth over $1000  including:

  • Active Schools Sports Kits for the school
  • Complimentary entries to the AMP ILT Kids Tryathlon (held March 2009).
  • Push Play prizes

Judges decision is final and winners will be contacted by Sport Southland.
