Banner Competition Winners

Being bright on a bike is a simple, but important message and combined with some creative artwork has led to Makarewa School winning the 2007 Tour of Southland banner competition. Road Sense facilitator Maureen Deuchrass, Sport Southland health and physical activity advisor Sally Martin and Share The Road cyclist Aaron Anderson visited Makarewa School last Friday to inform the surprised students of their winning entry.

Makarewa School pupils Jayden Rowe, Dillon Bryant, Keely Hughes, Brianna Nally, Grace Holland, Brogan Kennard and teacher's aide Kay Hughes designed and painted the banner for the competition.

With a maximum of six students working on each banner, Share The Road received over 60 entries from 25 schools around Southland.

The prize included an active school sports equipment kit for the school as well as individual prizes for the students involved including T-shirts, vouchers and entry into the kid's triathlon. School pupils from around the province entered the banner competition during the Tour of Southland following receiving cycling education and the importance of 30 mins a day of push play, to show support to the various cycling teams and their understanding of road safety rules.

Share The Road, a joint education campaign between Sport Southland, Road Sense and the police visited 2500 kids at the end of October/early November to educate children about using a bike on the road safely.
