Asset is a new umbrella group of individuals who volunteer their time to ensure that sporting, cultural and other community events can happen in Southland and these are executed in a safe, professional manner.
Over a long period of time Southland has established funding channels allowing it to build and maintain world class facilities capable of hosting national and international events. This of course is of huge benefit, but at the same time puts strain on organising groups including sporting and other organisations.
Reasons why people don’t volunteer:
- dual working parents
- the amount of events, sports, and activities now available
- reluctance of people to commit their time
- cultural/environmental obstacles- language, transportation
- insecurity about skills
- not sure who to approach/how to go about it
These pressures have all contributed to a diminished pool of volunteers.
Reasons to grasp volunteering opportunities:
- give something back to the community
- recognition and feedback
- learn new skills and meet new people
- being involved in a team environment
The ASSET Programme will be designed to benefit the mounting need for volunteers and the growing pool of individuals and groups who are keen to contribute.
Essentially the ASSET group will be involved in a wide spectrum of events:
Major events such as: Southland University Games 2010, Ascot Park Hotel Marathon, Powernet Tour of Southland
Stadium Southland/Velodrome events
Supporting Regional Sporting Organisations e.g. with National and International Tournaments
Community Events like Santa Parade, Rural Heritage Day, Shakespeare in the Park, Summer Festival
There is something for everyone!
