The National Secondary School Girls’ Cricket Competition, previously known as the Yoplait Cup, is now generously sponsored by the New Zealand Community Trust. Initially this competition, which was started in 1994, was played on an eight zone basis, similar to the Gillette Cup. From 2004, however, the competition has been played on an association basis. Each major cricket association uses either a knockout or round robin process to determine its association winner. The winners all proceed to the finals in Christchurch in early December together with the runners-up of the two associations with the most entries - which in 2007 are Auckland and Central Districts. The finals are contested over four days with the eight teams being divided into two pools of four, and for three days they play round-robin matches within their pool, before the teams are ranked, and then play crossover matches on day four to determine the eventual winners of the New Zealand Community Trust Cup for girls.

This is the only development competition that is played over a cricket season rather than a calendar year. The boys start the competition as year 9 students in October and finish as year 10 students in the summer tournament week in late March. Similar to the girls’ competition each major cricket association uses either a knockout or round robin process to determine its association winner. The winners all proceed to the finals in Taupo together with the runners-up of the two associations with the most entries. The finals are contested over four days with the eight teams being divided into two pools of four, and for three days they play round-robin matches within their pool, before the teams are ranked, and then play crossover matches on day four to determine the eventual winners of the New Zealand Community Trust Cup for junior boys.

The Gillette Cup was set up in 1990 making it one of the longest running competitions and sponsorships in secondary school sport. It was originally a knockout competition based on 8 geographical zones, 6 in the North Island and 2 in the South Island. From 2006, however, the competition has been played on an association basis. Each major cricket association uses either a knockout or a round robin process to determine its association winner. The winners all proceed to the finals in Palmerston North in mid December together with the runners-up of the two associations with the most entries - which in 2007 are Northern Districts and Central Districts. The finals are contested over four days with the eight teams being divided into two pools of four, and for three days they play round-robin matches within their pool, before the teams are ranked, and then play cross over matches on day four to determine the eventual winners of the Gillette Cup. Since its inception the Gillette Cup has become synonymous with secondary boys school cricket and provided one avenue for the development of our players of the future. To date 45 players have emerged through the Gillette Cup finals to play first class cricket with 11 subsequently going on to play for the Black Caps.
Entries for the Gillette Cup are sent by New Zealand Cricket to all eligible secondary schools in mid–August for the following year’s competition. Schools need to have their entry forms into New Zealand Cricket by 19 November.
