Spectators come to a cricket match to enjoy the game. It is the players they come to see ! Therefore it is a players’ game.
Certainly as an Umpire, you are part of it, but you must remain apart from it.
If you are prepared to study and spend time on the field, there is no reason why you cannot reach the highest levels of cricket as an Umpire
OR
If your specialist interest is figures and statistics and you wish to diligently record every event that happens on the field, then becoming an official Scorer is also an option.
Steps to becoming a successful cricket Umpire or Scorer

- Make contact with a member of the Southland Umpires & Scorers Association or the administration of Southland Cricket
- Attend a meeting of the Southland Umpires Association and/or receive an information pack outlining:
- what your commitment is to the game
- what the Umpires Assn’s commitment is to you as an Umpire
