Southland Healthy Eating - Healthy Action

The Southland HEHA Programme has been developed to help address three key population health priorities in Southland; improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and reducing obesity. The 30 month programme is community based and represents a partnership between the Southland District Health Board, Sport Southland, and the Ministry of Health through the HEHA Initiative Fund.

There are two programmes to be delivered by the Southland HEHA Programme.

They are:

Healthy Me & You

Healthy Me & You is a healthy lifestyle programme for caregivers of children 3 or 4 years old. The content of the programme promotes healthy eating behaviours and physical activity to caregivers and children, free of charge to selected families in Southland.

Southland HEHA Workforce Development

This course is specifically designed for people working within the community in social and health services, and aims to provide a supportive environment to this workforce so they are able to promote healthy lifestyles to families in Southland.

The course was delivered during May to August 2007 in four Southland locations: Invercargill, Gore, Takitimu, and Wakatipu. The course consists of four sessions, each lasting three hours, and the content includes:

  • the eight HEHA population health messages
  • cultural sensitivity and health, presented by Makuini McKercher
  • motivational interviewing skills

Following this course, participants have the continued support of the Southland HEHA Programme for their work within the community in promoting healthy eating and physical activity.
