Coaching is an integral part of sport - and Sport Southland recognises that through its work in community sport.

Coaching is one of Sport Southland's five key priority areas.

We believe that the more confident and knowledgeable a coach is, the better the experience and likely performance of that player or team will have whilst taking part in sport.

Follow the links below to find resources to help you along your coaching pathway, no matter what level you are at.

Regional Coach Development Pilot Programme

Following the recent consultation with Southland's Regional Sport Organisations (RSO) Forums and the commissioned report – The Southland Talent Development Strategy (Oct 2013) - Sport Southland and Academy Southland have partnered with Sport New Zealand to run a pilot in Southland for a Regional Coach Development programme.

The feedback during the consultation process was very clear that coaches play a significant role in growing athletes in the region. Southland RSO's are experiencing increasing difficulty in recruiting and retaining good quality coaches. This impacts, not only on playing numbers, but on the quality of athlete performance. Also evident was experienced coaches coaching multiple teams in one season leading to higher risk in coach burnout and teams and players without coaches at all.

The Southland Coach Development Pilot programme is designed to address coach capability and increase the number of quality, experienced coaches in our region. It also aims to improve the networking opportunities for development and performance coaches in Southland in addition to developing in house expertise around coach recruitment, retention and recognition strategies.

Below you will find a link to the project outline which covers programme objectives, commitments involved by coach and Regional Sporting Organisation, costs and benefits.

Regional Sport Organisations are invited to apply to this project which aims to lead to a rollout in 2015 and beyond.

Applications will need to be in by Friday 21 March 2014 to Vanessa Hughey, Community Sport Manager. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this project further, please contact Jason or Vanessa.
