The Community Trust of Southland Surf to City is a fun participation focused event that can be run, walked, or cycled. The 12km event is held in February each year starting at Oreti Beach and finishing at Queens Park in Invercargill.
This event is a fun way of encouraging physical activity and offers something for all levels of ability. Many also use the motivating event as a stepping stone to continue with physical activity and participate in more events.
2009 saw the participation rates swell to around 4000, well up on 3300 in 2008, which shows the event is becoming increasingly popular. Part of this can be contributed to the increased number of Invercargill businesses which took part in the workplace challenge. The aim is to get as many staff as possible participating in the event, whether running walking or cycling. The businesses embraced the idea encouraging everyone to take part with many printing their own Surf to City t-shirts.
