Gold for SIT

The Southern Institute of Technology have won gold in the volleyball at the Uni Games in Invercargill today – but last place still takes the silver.

Only two teams fought it out for volleyball glory this year, so the competition format was adjusted to feature the “best of three” games each day.

The SIT and fellow polytechnic EIT, from Napier, went head-to-head with the Southerners taking an early win on day one on Wednesday. It's strong form continued with victory today, which ultimately secured the title.

Competition manager Troy Paulin said he had no idea why there were so few numbers entered this year.

“Honestly, I don’t know. Both Otago and Canterbury are both really strong so I don’t know why they aren’t playing.”

He said overall everything had gone great.

“It’s been good, the teams are getting along really well.”

SIT volleyball captain Tammy Edginton said the team had struggled to get numbers initially but pulled it together on the day.

“It’s pretty awesome knowing that we have won,” she said.

Both teams will play a friendly game on Friday for the last day of the Uni Games.
